PRESIDENT"S MESSAGE:     Aloha Adventurers!

It is hard to believe that it is more than a year since we last saw each other in person and that our April meeting will mark a year of Zoom meetings. At the March meeting of the Board, when new COVID-19 cases were very low, we were quite excited to discuss how we would resume our normal meetings. As I write this, however, the numbers are climbing again. Regardless, the factors influencing our return to our dinner meetings are the same.

First, we need to be in Tier 4 at a minimum. Next, our meeting venues need to be ready for us. Right now, none of our usual locations has opened their private dining rooms for groups. Then we must adjust things like the maximum number of people we can accept, the dinner service and make other changes that might be needed. Once all that is done, we also recognize that while some of us are vaccinated and ready to gather, others are not. To accommodate as many members as possible, we are exploring the possibility of offering both in-person and Zoom options for some meetings. Stay tuned for further updates!

I would also like to thank you for renewing your membership in the Adventurers’ Club of Honolulu. It was wonderful to see how many people continue to be interested in our meetings.

Mahalo,   Carolyn Gire, President

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Virtually every non-profit organization has By-Laws that govern the operation of the organization and ACH is no exception. It has been many years since ours were updated, and we are no longer in compliance with the terms and conditions. After talking about it for the last 18 months or so, the Board has finally completed a review and revision, and now it is the role of the full membership to review and approve the new By-Laws. So, in mid-April, all members will receive an emailed copy of the document to read and then we will take a vote to approve them at the May meeting, prior to the program.
Mahalo to Lowell Angell, who led the committee and did much of the work of revising the document, and committee members Bill Arnemann, Carolyn Gire and Judy Simon for their assistance.

April 15, 2021 (Zoom) - by guest Jeff Tripp

                 “Adventures in Belgium ”

Belgium is less well-known and less visited (by international tourists) than other European countries. Jeffrey spent a summer session in 2019 at the University of Hawaii’s Study Abroad program in Lille, France, just across the border from Belgium. He had a good opportunity to learn more about Belgian culture and visit many local landmarks. His talk will celebrate the hidden assets of Belgium, highlighting historic Modernist mansions, World War I sites, and the country’s amazing food culture.
Jeffrey Tripp is an Instructor in the Department of American Studies at UHM. He wrote his dissertation on the DMZ in Korea and has presented at the Adventurers Club before.
