ADVENTUERES CLUB HONOLULU
JULY TO SEPT 2021
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Dear Adventurers,
Thank you to all who came out to the Outrigger Canoe Club for our restarted in-person meetings. Evidently, OCC members are all enjoying the reopening of service as well, leading to parking problems and lots of noise. I hope you enjoyed the meeting in spite of these issues, and will join us to hear three interesting programs by our members during the 3rd quarter.
I have been asked about the possibility of continuing to offer a Zoom option and we are evaluating how to do it, but the biggest problem is access to wi-fi at the venues. We will let you know as soon as we have figured it out.
Our yak bell came out of hiding for the June meeting and some of you may have wondered about its history. It was gifted to ACH by Harold Chapson, a longtime member on January 10, 1975. He acquired it while trekking in Tibet. This information comes to us courtesy of Bill Arnemann, who was president that year. Another piece of Adventurers' history came from Jack and Eulalia Luckett, who found a snippet about the Club in a Star-Advertiser article by Bob Sigall, a past presenter. He was reminiscing about a long-gone Honolulu sports bar called the Smile Café and mentioned that “the Honolulu Adventurers’ Club was founded there in 1954. It was a men’s club devoted to hairy-chested macho adventure”. (Note: Women were not admitted to membership until 1980, following a 28-7 vote in 1979 to allow “qualified” women adventurers). Our adventurers may not be quite so macho today but we still are out and about around the world and many of us have plans to resume international travel as soon as it is practical.
Mahalo, Carolyn Gire, President
Beyond the Reef: We are sad to report that Jay “Duke” Lembeck passed away on Friday, June 25, 2021. He joined the Adventurers’ Club of Honolulu in 1980, and was a devoted Club member, known for his enthusiastic welcome of new members, ideas for improving Club operations and offers of transportation for members who were no longer able to drive to meetings. He was also well known by us all for being the one member you could count on to ask questions of our presenters. He was a proud graduate of Punahou, class of 1962, and earned an MBA from Harvard. He was an avid sailor and a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. The ACH will miss him.

JULY 15, 2021 EGYPT AND JORDAN .. VISITED IN 2019. PLANNING & TRAVELING TO THE MIDDLE EAST
Outrigger Canoe Club
Judy and Ted Simon
Judy’s talk will focus on the issues that might concern you about traveling to the Middle East and her recommendations for planning your trip. She will share their photos of Egypt’s and Jordan’s ancient and modern sites, highlighting Egypt’s ancient temples and tombs and Jordan’s Petra. She will also comment on the importance of the sites. Time-permitting, there will be a short seminar on safely mounting and dismounting a camel.
Judy and Ted make one major trip each year, taking many photos and videos to record their adventure. Judy posts these photos with their memories in writing on her website to document their trips for friends, family and for their twilight years when they will no longer be able to travel. They have traveled to over 60 countries and Judy has documented these trips with over 30,000 photos and videos.
Judy and Ted are retired and have been members of Adventurers’ Club for 8 years. Judy is the current treasurer.
