PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE           Aloha Adventurers,

I hope you are all looking forward to our annual photo contest, organized once again by Donna Wendt. I think by now we all know the rules: send Donna up to 3 photos of your adventures that you haven’t submitted in the past, with a description of when and where it was taken. You should either be in the picture or have taken the picture. The deadlines and submission instructions are detailed in the description of the December 7th meeting. Please note the early reservation deadlines since this meeting is quite early and the Waikiki Yacht Club asks for a count 2 weeks prior to the meeting date.

We are also pleased to announce that the prizes should be better than ever, due to a generous $500 donation from the estate of our longtime member, Bob Liljestrand. Your Board of Directors voted to use the money for the December Holiday Party so we can all benefit from the donation and celebrate Bob’s memory.

This is also the time of year that the Adventurers’ Club of Honolulu elects the leadership team for the year to come. Lowell Angell is the Nominations Chair again this year, and is still looking for a few more candidates. If you would like to give back to the Club, please contact either Lowell at angell@hawaii.edu or myself at carogire@hawaii.rr.com. We will announce the slate of officers at our October meeting, and vote at the November meeting.

Mahalo

Carolyn Gire, Club President

                   Wednesday, October 19, 2022 -
by guest, Dr. Angel Yanagihara   “The Science of the Sting ”

Dr. Yanagihara is well-known for her work with box jellyfish (cubozoa), which are so common in Hawaii waters that their presence in covered in our local weather reports! Their stings are a complex medical challenge and public health threat, for which there are currently no validated standards of care for these life threatening stings. Dr. Yanagihara will talk about her research into box jellyfish and their venom and how the stings have been treated. She will also talk about the current, research-supported emergency treatment options for lifeguards, first responders and clinicians.

Dr. Angel Yanagihara is an Associate Research Professor in the Department of Tropical Medicine at the University of Hawaii. She was born in Anchorage Alaska. She graduated with two baccalaureate degrees, with honor theses, in both biology and chemistry, from the University of Virginia and spent 5 years as a doctoral degree candidate in biochemistry at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. and completed her degree at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

She was nearly killed by severe life-threatening stings by a swarm of Hawaiian box jellyfish in July of 1997. This experience led her to propose a short pilot study on the biochemical composition of these venoms. Successful completion of that pilot study in turn led to a 20-year career path in this field. Her current research focus includes utilizing research-based therapeutics to address public health concerns related to lethal cubozoan stings in the tropics. She has conducted field research and onsite training in numerous locations around the world.
