February 17, 2022 — by guests Carl & Stacy Evensen
                     “Maka’alamihi Gardens”
                         Waikiki Yacht Club

Carl and Stacy Evensen will talk about their Kaneohe property, Maka’alamihi Gardens, in Carl’s family since 1897, and how they have worked together as a team to transform it into native and other landscaped gardens geared toward providing education, inspiration and celebration opportunities for the public, especially children. Using their skills and experience, Carl and Stacy use ecological landscaping design methodologies to create garden spaces to demonstrate how to cultivate an urban food forest including native plants and how to manage and consume these food crops. Maka’alamihi Gardens hosts monthly community work days so interested neighbors and friends can assist in the development of the gardens while learning how to grow, manage and eat the garden’s bounty.
Carl has a PhD in Agronomy and Soil Science and has been a professor in the College of Tropical Agriculture, Associate Dean of CTAHR and the Interim Director of Lyon Arboretum until he retired in 2020. Stacy has a MS in Nutritional Sciences, worked in Government Relations until 2018 and is a credentialed Master Gardener.

March 17, 2022 — by guest Charles Johnson

“Mining in Botswana: Adventures in One of Africa’s

 Most Successful Countries”

                             Waikiki Yacht Club

When Charles Johnson arrived in Botswana, it ranked among the three poorest countries in Africa. By 2021 it had the fourth highest per capita income in Africa at $18,000/per capita (purchasing power parity). It also has the highest Human Development Index in continental Sub-Saharan Africa.

The author will give his views on how Botswana achieved sustained economic growth with little corruption, while all other African countries failed. He will share personal experiences (both serious and hilarious) with three presidents of Botswana: Harry Oppenheimer, Chairman of DeBeers, and others. He will comment on his African safaris into the most remote parts of the Kalahari and meeting the last of the nomadic San people (Bushman).
Charles Johnson has a MS in geology from the University of California, Riverside, and a PhD in Minerals Economics from Penn State University. He has undertaken minerals and energy consulting projects in more than three-dozen developing countries. He spent 3 ½ years living in Botswana, where he was the senior economic advisor to the Minister and Permanent Secretary (also became Acting Permanent Secretary) in the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Water Affairs. He was heavily involved in negotiating two major diamond mining agreements, including the Jwaneng diamond mining agreement, the most profitable diamond development in the world. He was on the board of directors of a major diamond company and also a copper-nickel company. In recent years, he has been writing novels. His first, Reunion Promise, was partly set in Africa and diamonds; and his second, Romancing Waikiki contains twenty-one eclectic love stories set in Waikiki.
