ADVENTURERS CLUB OF HONOLULU NEWSLETTER Oct-Dec 2021

           ADVENTUERES CLUB HONOLULU

                October to December 2021 Newsletter

NOTE:  Meeting for Nov 17th will be on ZOOM, not at the OUTRIGGER

                 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Hello Adventurers!

It’s difficult to believe that we’re coming to the end of another year. Disruptions due to COVID-19 are still affecting our club’s operations and we find ourselves back on Zoom for September and October, which has the benefit of allowing our off-island members to participate in our programs but I know that meeting in person during the summer was welcomed by many.

We always appreciate the work done by our reservationists and I would like to thank Gretchen Arnemann (July), Brigitte Visser (August) and Kathy Reinhard (September), with a special mahalo to Brigitte who had to deal with lots of questions and last-minute adjustments due to the concerns about the number of rising COVID cases .

You will notice a change for our November meeting. It was originally scheduled for Maple Garden, but they have closed their private room permanently. When we looked for an alternate location, Outrigger Canoe Club was already booked for our usual Thursday, so we have moved the date to Wednesday, November 17. Similarly, our December meeting is usually at Zippy’s on Vineyard, but they have also closed their private room. We have a reservation at the Waikiki Yacht Club instead, but we had to move that one to Wednesday as well, so we will have our Christmas Photo Contest on Wednesday, December 8th. If anyone would like to help find new venues, please let me know – we have a list of about 25 that we have checked that don’t meet our needs!

Finally, it’s time to nominate officers and directors to lead our organization in 2022. Lowell Angell is the Nominations Committee Chair once again, so please say yes if he contacts you!

Mahalo,

Carolyn Gire, President

The Historic Waikiki Gold Coast & Home Walking Tour”

                                            ZOOM
Beginning in the 1920s, the Waikiki Diamond Head Terrace area developed into the treasured historic home community we know today. The spread of high rise apartments, condominiums, hotels, private clubs, and restaurants from Kaimana Beach to Diamond Head Terrace in the 1950s and 1960s arguably filled a post-Statehood need. But the threat that development would overwhelm Diamond Head communities presented the first major confrontation with a new historic preservation consciousness.   Come hear about this struggle and the lovely neighborhood at the foot of Diamond Head that contains one of the largest intact clusters of historic homes in Hawai‘i.

Our speaker, Philip Deters, JD is a volunteer for the Historic Hawaii Foundation.  Prior to his retirement, he was the  Assistant Attorney General for Maryland  in the State Historic Preservation Office.

by guest    Amelia Meier

“Living as a Hunter-Gatherer with the Ba’Aka Forest People in the Republic of Congo”

Dr. Meier will talk about the four months she spent living with the Ba'Aka forest people (derogatively known as pygmies) in the northeastern Republic of Congo. This will include daily life from building huts, gathering food, and how song and dance was incorporated into all aspects of life. She will also share the now humorous stories that occur when living in a totally different social context including accidentally almost becoming someone's third wife.
Dr. Meier grew up in San Diego. Always loving travel, her first Africa centered adventure was moving to Ivory Coast in 2012. Since then she has spent the majority of her time living in West or Central Africa. She received her PhD from Duke University for research on forest elephant social dynamics in Gabon and moved to Hawaii in May to spend time at the University of Hawaii to figure out how we can use satellites to monitor coral reef health around the world.
