Haiti after the Devastating Earthquake in January 2010
By Member Donna Wendt

Thursday, March 17 at Treetops Restaurant, 3737 Manoa Road

Member Donna Wendt will present the story of her trip to Haiti after the devastating earthquake there in January 2010. Beginning with touchdown at the Santo Domingo airport in the Dominican Republic, because the Port Au Prince airport in Haiti was closed, the story unfolds after a long bus ride to an orphanage compound where the medical mission group “Operation Smile” had set up tents to provide life-saving surgeries for victims of the earthquake. Donna is a volunteer operating room nurse with that organization. Most of the destruction was over an hour away in the capitol, Port Au Prince, where buildings collapsed and fell on thousands of people. Besides pictures of the refugee encampment, daily life and surgeries, a road trip into the capitol gives sad views of the horrible aftermath. The inner strength of the people is ever present.

FEBRUARY 2011
Hokule‘a and the Voyage to Japan, 2007
By Guest Ka'iulani Murphy, Polynesian Voyaging Society
Thursday, February 17 at the Outrigger Canoe Club, 2509 Kalakaua Avenue

Born and raised in Waimea, Hawai‘i, Ka‘iulani Murphy has been a crew member with the Polynesian Voyaging Society since 1997. She has had the privilege to sail with the iconic voyaging canoe Hokule‘a throughout the Hawaiian Islands as well as deep-sea. She continues to kokua with voyaging education programs and learn the ways our kupuna explored and navigated our vast ocean.

Since Hokule'a's inaugural voyage to Tahiti in 1976, the double-hull voyaging canoe has sailed over 100,000 miles and touched the shores of many islands of Oceania. Sparking a cultural renaissance, Hokule‘a and her crew continue to explore the ancient ocean pathways in order to perpetuate voyaging traditions and values. In 2007, after voyaging to Micronesia with the Alingano Maisu, a canoe built for Hokule‘a’s first navigator, Mau Piailug, Hokule‘a continued to sail west to Japan. Come and hear how this voyage helped to rekindle the desire to sail Hokule‘a around the world.

JANUARY 2011
An African Safari
By Guests Bobbie Jennings, Ken and Evelyn RedmanThursday,
January 20 at the  Outrigger Canoe Club, 2509 Kalakaua Avenue

Ken Redman, past Director of the Honolulu Zoo, and his wife Evelyn, had been on many an African safari. Bobbie Jennings had soloed around the world for 5 years, but never got to Africa. So when Ken announced he was retiring as Director and leading his own safari, Bobbie jumped at the chance and was first to sign up. After their return Bobbie and Evelyn put together a slide presentation for the Waikiki Yacht Club, where Bobbie is a member. All three are pleased to bring this presentation to the Adventurers' Club.
--
A large crowd of seventy people attended this interesting African Safari.  It was quite an evening of beautiful sunset, good food and terrific photos of Tanzania.  Also a slide show with music was a big hit.  Below are some photos of the evening.  New members, Don and Kathy Hudson, brought their guest, Sammy, from Nigeria to the meeting, and he added quite an authentic sparkle.
