"Norman Sicily and the Cappella Palantina" by guest Thomas Klobe

Dr. Klobe’s talk follows the publication of his latest  book, The Islamic Ceilings of the Cappella Palantina in Palermo: Other Views, a work that entailed five decades of research. The ceilings represent the singular surviving evidence of a brilliant culture that thrived under Muslim rule and that continued to manifest itself under the Norman Christians. Tom contends that consideration must be given to the possibility that the craftsmen and artists who constructed and painted the ceilings were Sicilians, not artisans imported from other parts of the Islamic world as most scholars contend. Tom also delves into new views of the meaning of the construction and the paintings that fill the multitude of niches on the ceilings.  Tom Klobe is a professor emeritus and for 29 years was director of the University of Hawaii Art Gallery. He taught courses in design, museum studies, and Islamic and medieval art history. His interest in Islam began as a Peace Corps volunteer in Iran from 1964-66.

JANUARY 2023           Aloha Adventurers,

It doesn’t seem possible that another year has gone by, and yet here we are again, wishing each other a Happy New Year!  2023 is bringing changes to our Board as long-time volunteers have stepped back or taken on less demanding roles and we are happy to welcome our new Board members.
The full list of Officers and Directors is provided on page 4 of this newsletter, and we have three people who are asking for your help:
Lori Anderson is our Reservations Chair so she needs you to say yes when she approaches you to serve as a reservationist for a meeting.
Terrilea Burnett is our Membership guru and will be taking membership renewals.  She is your go-to contact if you have friends interested in joining the Club.
Brigitte Visser is our Program Chair and is looking for people to present at our monthly meetings. No one has enough friends and acquaintances to fill the calendar on their own, so it helps when you recommend someone or agree to present yourself.
You will also notice that our prices are higher. Basic menu costs are higher and our venues are all charging fees for room rentals and the use of equipment that prior to last year we didn’t pay. The Club has been absorbing some of the increased costs for members but can’t for guests so the additional charge for your guests is now $10 – a good reason for frequent guests to become members!
Finally, Lowell and I agreed to share the presidency this year because neither one of us was able to commit 100%. David and I are off on an around-the-world cruise on Queen Victoria and will see you in May. Lowell is away for January but will then take the lead until May.

       Mahalo,  Carolyn Gire, Club Co-President

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE           Aloha Adventurers,

I hope you are all looking forward to our annual photo contest, organized once again by Donna Wendt. I think by now we all know the rules: send Donna up to 3 photos of your adventures that you haven’t submitted in the past, with a description of when and where it was taken. You should either be in the picture or have taken the picture. The deadlines and submission instructions are detailed in the description of the December 7th meeting. Please note the early reservation deadlines since this meeting is quite early and the Waikiki Yacht Club asks for a count 2 weeks prior to the meeting date.

We are also pleased to announce that the prizes should be better than ever, due to a generous $500 donation from the estate of our longtime member, Bob Liljestrand. Your Board of Directors voted to use the money for the December Holiday Party so we can all benefit from the donation and celebrate Bob’s memory.

This is also the time of year that the Adventurers’ Club of Honolulu elects the leadership team for the year to come. Lowell Angell is the Nominations Chair again this year, and is still looking for a few more candidates. If you would like to give back to the Club, please contact either Lowell at angell@hawaii.edu or myself at carogire@hawaii.rr.com. We will announce the slate of officers at our October meeting, and vote at the November meeting.

                   Wednesday, October 19, 2022 -
by guest, Dr. Angel Yanagihara   “The Science of the Sting ”

Dr. Yanagihara is well-known for her work with box jellyfish (cubozoa), which are so common in Hawaii waters that their presence in covered in our local weather reports! Their stings are a complex medical challenge and public health threat, for which there are currently no validated standards of care for these life threatening stings. Dr. Yanagihara will talk about her research into box jellyfish and their venom and how the stings have been treated. She will also talk about the current, research-supported emergency treatment options for lifeguards, first responders and clinicians.

Dr. Angel Yanagihara is an Associate Research Professor in the Department of Tropical Medicine at the University of Hawaii. She was born in Anchorage Alaska. She graduated with two baccalaureate degrees, with honor theses, in both biology and chemistry, from the University of Virginia and spent 5 years as a doctoral degree candidate in biochemistry at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. and completed her degree at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

She was nearly killed by severe life-threatening stings by a swarm of Hawaiian box jellyfish in July of 1997. This experience led her to propose a short pilot study on the biochemical composition of these venoms. Successful completion of that pilot study in turn led to a 20-year career path in this field. Her current research focus includes utilizing research-based therapeutics to address public health concerns related to lethal cubozoan stings in the tropics. She has conducted field research and onsite training in numerous locations around the world.

ADVENTURERS CLUB OF HONOLULU JULY-SEP 2022

 THE ADVENTURERS’ CLUB OF HONOLULU

                July to September 2022 Newsletter

NOTE:   Sept 14, Wednesday is new Sep date......and will be at Waikiki Yacht Club

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Aloha Adventurers’    Thank you all for attending our second quarter meetings, with two new venues. As often happens, when we try someplace new there are unexpected issues, which we have addressed with the locations. As a result of feedback from our April meeting at the Hawaii Kai Golf Course, they have purchased a new microphone which should improve the sound quality and we talked to them about substitutions that were made to the menu and have been promised that won’t happen again. We hope you will give them another try, because the facility, the parking and the view are really good! If you need directions, please ask Lowell when you make your reservations.

At our May meeting, I made a plea for help and several members offered to give programs, a couple offered to take reservations and one member offered to help on the Board. Thank you to everyone who volunteered.

Lowell Angell and I will soon be seeking members to serve on the Board or as an officer next year since we will have several vacancies. If you are interested, please let us know in the next couple of months.

Finally, since lots of us are traveling again, I have been asked to restart sharing about our travel experiences. So starting with the July meeting, we will invite members to tell us about their travels in 2-3 minutes, just where you went and a couple of highlights. We want to make it possible for everyone to participate who would like to.

Generally, we will do this between the introduction of guests and dinner, but it depends on how the dinner service is going, and could be moved to later in the evening.

Yours in Adventure,  Carolyn Gire, Club President

Thursday, July 21, 2022 - “Ports of Spain and Gibraltar"

by member, Ed Carus   Hawaii Kai Golf Course

Ed will take us on a voyage through the western Mediterranean, touching upon at least three of Spain’s fifteen major ports. He’ll also take the armchair traveler to Majorca and Ibiza. Spanish ports have played a major role in the development and growth of the country. They are independently operated under different port authorities but are centrally managed by the Ports of the State, which is a government-owned company responsible for the execution of policies. It is known regionally as Puertos del Estado.
Ed Carus, a frequent speaker for the club, will take us on a journey to the ports of Spain: Majorca, Minorca, Barcelona—and, as an added bonus, Gibraltar. His talk is illustrated with a video of his journey. Ed Carus is the author of Sixty Year Behind the Mast (Newman Springs Publishing, 2021), an autobiographical account of his life as a captain and sailor.

Thurs, August 18, 2022   “Polar Bear Safari ”

by members David & Carolyn Gire  VIA    ZOOM

Last fall, Carolyn and David were looking for a replacement for a cancelled trip to Europe, with the criteria that it be closer to home and require less effort to comply with pandemic restrictions. The result was a trip to see polar bears. The Seal River Heritage Lodge is located on the edge of Hudson Bay in Manitoba, Canada, and is noted for its polar bear (fall/spring) and beluga whale (summer) sightings. Hear about how to safely walk near polar bears and see what it’s like to be in a remote lodge with only 25 other people, including guests and staff.
Carolyn and David are both retired and enjoy planning and taking trips around the world. They have visited all 7 continents, more than 50 countries and are slowing working towards their goal of 50 states.

Wednesday, September 14, 2022 — “African Forest Elephants ”   by guest Amelia Meier

 LOCATION  Waikiki Yacht Club

Amelia is a return presenter who wowed us with her tales of adventure living with the Ba'Aka forest people. This time, Dr. Meier will talk about what it took to track and study African forest elephants through the tropical forests of Gabon in western Africa. It is the smallest of the elephant species and is threatened by habitat loss, fragmentation, and poaching.
Dr. Meier grew up in San Diego. Always loving travel, her first Africa centered adventure was moving to Ivory Coast in 2012. Since then she has spent the majority of her time living in West or Central Africa. She received her PhD from Duke University for research on forest elephant social dynamics in Gabon and moved to Hawaii in 2021 to spend time at the University of Hawaii to figure out how we can use satellites to monitor coral reef health around the world.
