"Norman Sicily and the Cappella Palantina" by guest Thomas Klobe

Dr. Klobe’s talk follows the publication of his latest  book, The Islamic Ceilings of the Cappella Palantina in Palermo: Other Views, a work that entailed five decades of research. The ceilings represent the singular surviving evidence of a brilliant culture that thrived under Muslim rule and that continued to manifest itself under the Norman Christians. Tom contends that consideration must be given to the possibility that the craftsmen and artists who constructed and painted the ceilings were Sicilians, not artisans imported from other parts of the Islamic world as most scholars contend. Tom also delves into new views of the meaning of the construction and the paintings that fill the multitude of niches on the ceilings.  Tom Klobe is a professor emeritus and for 29 years was director of the University of Hawaii Art Gallery. He taught courses in design, museum studies, and Islamic and medieval art history. His interest in Islam began as a Peace Corps volunteer in Iran from 1964-66.

JANUARY 2023           Aloha Adventurers,

It doesn’t seem possible that another year has gone by, and yet here we are again, wishing each other a Happy New Year!  2023 is bringing changes to our Board as long-time volunteers have stepped back or taken on less demanding roles and we are happy to welcome our new Board members.
The full list of Officers and Directors is provided on page 4 of this newsletter, and we have three people who are asking for your help:
Lori Anderson is our Reservations Chair so she needs you to say yes when she approaches you to serve as a reservationist for a meeting.
Terrilea Burnett is our Membership guru and will be taking membership renewals.  She is your go-to contact if you have friends interested in joining the Club.
Brigitte Visser is our Program Chair and is looking for people to present at our monthly meetings. No one has enough friends and acquaintances to fill the calendar on their own, so it helps when you recommend someone or agree to present yourself.
You will also notice that our prices are higher. Basic menu costs are higher and our venues are all charging fees for room rentals and the use of equipment that prior to last year we didn’t pay. The Club has been absorbing some of the increased costs for members but can’t for guests so the additional charge for your guests is now $10 – a good reason for frequent guests to become members!
Finally, Lowell and I agreed to share the presidency this year because neither one of us was able to commit 100%. David and I are off on an around-the-world cruise on Queen Victoria and will see you in May. Lowell is away for January but will then take the lead until May.

       Mahalo,  Carolyn Gire, Club Co-President
