Adventurers' Club Honolulu Meetings Sep - Dec 2018

 THE ADVENTURERS' CLUB
     OF HONOLULU
Newsletter:  Sept to Dec, 2018
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
           Greetings fellow Adventurers!
As I write this I'm in Paris at the end of an extended summer trip to Europe, enjoying many new cities and sights and experiences. Among them was a cruise to Scotland, the Faroe Islands and Iceland and visits to Leipzig and Wismar in Germany, and Ghent and Bruge in Belgium. But as Dorothy said in the Wizard of Oz, "There's no place like home" and I'll be back shortly.
We have another round of excellent and varied evening programs, plus a special new adventure, and I hope to see you all at them!
   Aloha, Lowell Angell, President

NEW DINING ADVENTURE FOR ALL MEMBERS – ALA WAI GOLF COURSE RESTAURANT
We have found a good venue to try for our Nov. 15, 2018 dinner when Bill Chapman will present his new book on “Ancient Sites of Southeast Asia”. The Arnemanns and Simons met Sunday evening, Aug. 12 with owner/chef at Ala Wai Golf Course Restaurant. We sampled 3 of the 4 combination plates she suggested. It is delicious food and prices are very reasonable.
Check the November 15 dinner menu in this newsletter and you will see the various options with prices. The view is expansive with large windows overlooking the golf course. They can accommodate up to 50 diners near the windows in the mauka section of the dining room, separated by potted plants.
There is plenty of free parking and it is a convenient location with access from Kapahulu Ave. Drive makai towards ocean, turn right into street just before the Waikiki Public Library and drive ¼ mile to golf course building on the right. If you are on target the Ala Wai Canal will be on your left.         To google directions the address is 404 Kapahulu Ave. We will give more detailed directions in the November reminder email. The owner is very willing to please, wants us to be satisfied and assured us they can serve food hot and very quickly. Be one of the first to experience this exciting new venue in November 15!    Put on your calendar to book it November 1.

“Sketching on the Move”      By member Simon Bussiere
As Simon explains: “It's a blast to travel and explore, but it can be difficult to pause for long enough to take in the character of a place. “ For Simon—a landscape architect and designer—sketching is a way to slow down. As he explains, “I find it to be a great way of learning to see and better understand the intrinsic qualities of a place.” Simon draws regularly when he travels, “and occasionally the drawings even come out ok”, he explains. Simon will share his process from recent trips through Europe, Asia, Latin America, and the US and talk about how travelers can integrate this practice into their next adventure!

“Tasmania or Bust: A Six-Month Trip from California to the Far Pacific”      By guest Bill Leary
Kaneohe resident Bill Leary helped owner/skipper Rob Vaughan sail Van Diemen III, a 64‘ custom built wooden sloop, from Newport Beach, CA to Hobart, Tasmania for 6 months in 2017, a voyage exceeding 10,000 nautical miles. This was an extraordinary deep-water voyage with many fascinating ports of call, including the Marquesas, Tuamotus, Society Islands, Niue, Tonga, Fiji, New Caledonia, Norfolk, and Lord Howe Island. Follow the track of the Van Diemen III through the South Seas and see Tasmania, the land that time has forgotten and said by many to be the most beautiful island in the world. Bill has spoken to us a few times in the past, including February 21, 2013, about his cruising experiences in the South Pacific and Hawaii aboard his 35 foot sailboat Moku pe'a".
