Adventurers Club Honolulu Sep - Dec 2019 Meeting

Adventurers Club Honolulu
   Sep - Dec  2019 Meetings

President’s Message
Aloha Adventurers!
Hard to believe, but this is the last quarter of the year! As always, we have three interesting programs for you. Mark your calendars and plan to attend all three!
Our December 12th program will be extra special as it’s not only our Holiday Party and Photo Contest, but our 65th Anniversary celebration with a SPECIAL PRESENT for you! See the December listing for details.
   Hope to see you soon!
            Aloha, Lowell Angell, President

CLUB NEWS and REMINDERS
NEW RSVP DEADLINES
Please note that the deadlines for RSVPs have now been moved to the SUNDAY PRIOR to the meeting dates. These deadlines are now FIRM, as we must call in the count the next day. No exceptions will be made for late RSVPs. SO IT'S UP TO YOU TO CALL IN YOUR RSVP BY THE DEADLINE DATES!

VOLUNTEER HELP NEEDED!
Our Club runs smoothly only because a dedicated corps of members do the many tasks necessary to make it all happen. Besides your elected officers and directors, we have volunteer members who take your reservation for the meetings. WE NEED YOUR HELP! Please consider helping by taking reservations or by serving on the board. We would love to have you and you’ll be helping your Club!

ELECTION TIME
In accordance with our bylaws, prior to the October meeting you will receive the slate of candidates for election as directors and officers for the coming term. The slate, along with any additional nominations from the floor, will be voted on by members attending the November meeting. The new directors and officers will be installed at the December meeting. If you would like more information or have any questions, please contact president Lowell Angell at angell@hawaii.edu or 808 988-2098.

KNOW OF A GOOD PLACE FOR OUR MEETINGS?
We’re always on the lookout for a suitable new venue for the Club meetings. Places that meet our several needs (sufficient space, good menu, reasonable cost, adequate parking, etc.) are not easy to find. If you know of a good possibility, please let Lowell know! (See contact info above).

EXCITING NEW RECIPROCAL CLUB!
We are very pleased and excited to announce that we now have a reciprocal arrangement with the City University Club, a private luncheon club in London, England. It was founded in 1895 and has approximately 500 members. Adventurers’ Club members are invited to visit and enjoy their facilities when they are in London. The logistics are still being worked out and more information and full details will be emailed to members, hopefully soon.

3 MONTH NEWSLETTER NOW ONLY VIA EMAIL.

Know of a good future speaker or program?
Tell our 1st Vice-President/Program Chair, Bill Chapman about it.
         Email him at: wchapman@hawaii.edu

 October 17, 2019    Maple Gardens
Groundlings and Bear Tacos: Thru-hiking in the 21st Century
  by member Hans Van Tilburg
Hans will explore a brand-new subculture in parts of Hawai‘i and the mainland (Pacific Crest Trail, Appalachian Trail, Continental Divide Trail). Hans has presented programs on his work with NOAA before; this time he’ll be on dry land. Don’t miss this interesting presentation!
Hans relates that poet Gary Snyder said "Nature is not a place to visit. It is home."  This is literally true for the hundreds of thru-hikers who complete long-distance treks (2,000-3,000 miles) on national scenic trails each year.  But how comfortable can you be when everything you need for six months is carried on your back?  Well, Hans says, it's actually been getting better and better.
Join Hans as he talks about the phenomenon of this strange and mostly unseen thru-hiker subculture, as well as some of his (much shorter) hikes on the Pacific Crest Trail, Appalachian Trail, Arizona Trail, and the Hawaiian Islands.
And if you're still wondering what "groundlings" and "bear tacos" are -- Come and find out!

Annual Holiday Party, Member Photo Contest and
65th Anniversary Celebration!

Contest Coordinated by member Donna Wendt

It’ll be a festive time as we celebrate the holidays, the Club’s 65th Anniversary AND enjoy our 7th annual Member Photo Contest.
PLUS (as if that isn’t great enough) we’ll enjoy a special holiday turkey dinner with all the trimmings (for those who don’t like turkey we’ll have Korean Chicken Salad) AND -- thanks to a generous donor -- the Club will subsidize HALF THE DINNER COST FOR MEMBERS! (Guests pay the regular prices noted below.)
We can accommodate a MAXIMUM of 35 MEMBERS AND GUESTS, so plan to RSVP for this special event starting NOVEMBER 22 (the Day AFTER our regular November meeting) with the deadline of December 8. NO RSVPs WILL BE ACCEPTED PRIOR TO NOVEMBER 22! Priority for reservations will be given to members who submit photos for the contest.
Contest organizer extraodinaire, Donna Wendt, will pull out all her usual magic and provide a wonderful evening for all, with great prizes! Zippy’s has the large room we need for this fun event!           TO SUBMIT PHOTOS: Members should select NO MORE THAN THREE (3) PHOTOS (jpg preferred) and email them, with captions for each one, to Donna (donwen@aol.com) BEGINNING NOVEMBER 9th AND NO LATER THAN NOVEMBER 30th.

Those submitting photos MUST plan to attend the dinner and BRIEFLY describe each of your photos with year taken.
