If you can’t eat with us but you would like to enjoy the presentation, come about 7:30 and sit in the back.  We request a donation of $5 to help defray the overhead costs.  Please give it to

13  DECEMBER 2012
Chanticleer
  Chanticleer Men’s Ensemble
Thursday, December 13 at Queen Kapiolani Hotel, 150 Kapahulu Avenue
Chanticleer’s annual Christmas concerts in the Medieval Sculpture Hall of the Metropolitan Museum of Art have become a holiday tradition in New York selling out months in advance.

The original Chanticleer was a singing rooster in the works of Chaucer of England. This singing group of twelve men, Chanticleer, has made an incredibly wonderful DVD of classical Christmas music that thrills and charms the listener no matter how many times it is replayed. The Washington Post newspaper has been quoted saying: I can’t imagine anything more purely beautiful than Chanticleer singing in the shadow of the Northern European Christmas tree at the Metropolitan Museum. Take twelve men who sing exquisitely in tune and put them in a biggish room with a high, vaulted ceiling and you get sounds that shimmer and cling like hand-bells on a chilly day.
Whatever your beliefs are, this Christmas music will charm you and put you right in the spirit for Christmas celebrating.

OFF THE BEATEN PATH IN ENGLAND
by Members Carolyn Gire, Joy and Geoff Ashton

Thursday, November 15 at Treetops Restaurant, 3737 Manoa Road
David and Carolyn Gire (back) and Joy Ashton (in front) were the presenters
This compilation of several trips to England has it all: pretty countryside, lambs, interesting history, donkeys, flowers, wild ponies, seaside fun and much more. Visit a diverse selection of locations that are familiar to English holiday-makers but not as well-known to visitors. You'll see the moors of Yorkshire in the north of England, Derbyshire's Peak District in the Midlands and beautiful Cornish gardens in the south, as well as the highlights of several other counties.

Geoff Ashton is gone from us, but he had planned to do this program and here it is for us. He stated once that he spent 80 hours working on this DVD program. This will be our last hurrah with Geoff!

18 OCTOBER 2012

THE ROSS SEA ISLANDS OF ANTARCTICA

By Member Janet Miller

Thurs, October 18 at OutriggerCanoe Club, 2509 Kalakaua Avenue
Thursday, October 18th at OUTRIGGER CANOE CLUB, 2509 Kalakaua Ave - Waikiki
At the beginning of the 20th century the world's imagination was excited by following the journeys of some bold men destined to become heroes conquering the proclaimed "last great goal of exploration": Reaching the South Pole and traversing the Antarctic continent

Janet and Ralph Miller have had three wonderful trips into Antarctica: 1991, 1996 and 2011 that par- alleled some of the findings and routes of the early heroes: Robert Scott, Ernest Shackleton and Roald Amundsen. The pictures and thoughts Janet shares with you she hopes will excite your imagination.

They boarded an icebreaker in Christchurch, New Zealand, that travelled through open seas and pushed through pack ice to the Ross Sea. They got close to the Emperor penguins in their rookery before the chicks fledged and headed to sea. They experienced the thrill of icebreaking, helicopter rides, zodiac cruises and hikes in areas nearly inaccessible except via one of these methods. They saw birds, plants and geology and the historic relics left behind over 100 years ago by the first explorers. Please join us on this recounted journey.
